The Promise

Le poème original
The Promise//Adreyo Sen
I’m happy that you have gone
For the dent in the bedsheets
And the absence of your hand
Across my breast
The smell of hasty aftershave
In the air
And your boxer shorts
At my feet Promise your return
Your still presence on the doorsteps
A shy smile flickering at your lips
And that look on your face
Of wrongdoing
For wrongdoing it is you’ve done
You’ve not kissed me
Or tucked me into your hands
With an air of embarrassed ownership
But you step forward to
Remedy that
And I am happy to lie
Curled up in these bedsheets knowing
That you’ll come back home
For how could I be
Without the promise of your return?
